Just got this insert I think its a good product overall with some noticeable issues that may bother some people. The look and feel of the insert is very sturdy and well made and when there is enough fuel in the tank the flame is nice and strong without the annoying zippo fuel smell. Some problems, though. The fuel tank is small so I find myself refueling this way more than the standard insert. More annoying is that I can't open the Zippo lid consistently everytime with this insert. With the normal zippo insert the lid opens every single time with little effort, but with the Thunderbird the lid often gets stuck halfway up. This is also the case with my z-plus insert which i've tried in several zippo cases. I still like the thunderbird because it the butane fuel is odorless and stores a long time.

I'm a bit disappointed with it. Two small things I noticed are: Mine does not light every time like it seemed it would. Thought that butane would ignite easier than a wick, but not really. Requires 3 strikes some times. The flame adjustment only works in the very last area towards the high end. Put the screw below 80 % and it goes out, so mine adjusts to either on high or very low flame in like 2mm of turning the adjustment screw. Returning it isn't really worth it due to paying a $9 USP return mailing.

Just received it so admittedly, I can't tell you about it's overall quality based on extensive use. It generates a nice flame, has the real Zippo feel with the flint ignition and you can't beat the lifetime warranty. The only drawback that I see is that it activates the butane valve instantly when you open the top, so if you like to keep flicking the lid open and closed as I often do, it will probably drain the butane fairly quickly. That's a small price to pay versus using the standard Zippo insert with fluid that evaporates too quickly or leaks out into your pants! Also, you might note that if you push this insert all the way into the Zippo, the spring for the top won't fully activate when you open it...you won't get the Zippo ping! I took a spare flint, inverted the insert and placed the flint lying lengthwise in the cut out area around the flame control valve on the bottom. I then slid the Zippo case down onto the insert. This allowed the spare flint to shim the insert to a perfect fit and now I have a spare flint with me! I have used the Z-plus (made by Blazer...fits in Zippos and creates a torch flame) insert in the past and like the torch flame. The only problem is, that I have gone through two of them and I would not say that my use is excessive. The Z-plus quality seems rather poor while this product clearly looks to be of superior engineering! The shipping time was also excellent from this merchant. Arrived within 4 days of my order even though I'm in NY!

I am very happy with this insert. It has the same feel as the Zippo insert, but no smell and it doesn't dry out. Three minor complaints. It doesn't last quite as long as I would like between refills, but it is better then fluid. The insert is a bit wider then the original, so it gets powder from the flint down the sides. This is easily cleaned out when filling with butane. Third thing is it a bit short, so some shimming is required to get it sit correctly. Again, not a big problem. I will be ordering another one.

Way better than a Zippo Butane (Blu). And way better than a Zippo fueled lighter.

Definitely an excellent choice for any Zippo user. I get tired of having conventional lighter fluid leaking out of my Zippos, going through my pants pocket and irritating my leg. The Thunderbird lets you keep the soft flame of the Zippo without the leakage or evaporation of lighter fluid. I think it's great.

Excellent choice for classic Zippo enthusiast. I have the pipe stye and the soft flame reduces the chance of possibly burning the top of a favored pipe that I've encountered with some torch style lighters. Well done.

Unlike torch lighter inserts, this soft flame has the same feel as the original Zippo, but without the mess. I am buying more to bring all my classic lighters back to life. The pipe lighter insert is wonderful.

This is the best thing that's ever happened to the famous Zippo lighter. It's hard to improve on perfection but this sure does. Easy on gas and works every time. Love it!!!!
